I carry my phone with me when I run in case something terrible happens to me. Not that I’m paranoid, but in the event of a sprained ankle, I’d like not to have to crawl through the woods. I don’t exactly run places where there is anyone that could respond to any cries for help! I was at my SIL’s, to let Jeb out while I ran on her property. She’s got nice trails.
But my phone rang about 2/3rds of the way through my run. It was the person from the Border Collie rescue. I answered the phone apologizing for being breathless from running–not running to the phone, but running WITH the phone! She was wondering if I could carry one more. I said no.
I then called her back and said I could rent an SUV, but I’d need some help to defray the cost. We already had to pay for gas and a room. An extra $230 was not really in the budget for this trip. The 2nd BC is in Asheville…and we have to swing straight through.

I’ve awakened pleasantly sore from my cross training cardio. When time is precious, finding double duty strength/cardio fits the ticket. And….though it was just 18 minutes, it was an efficacious 18 minutes!
October 30th, 2008
Rather than run or bike, I elected to do a general cardio cross training. My goal was to keep my heart rate up over 135. As you can see, the average was 145 with it going up as much as 165.
I did a variety of things. I warmed up with the Bosu, which I love. I then added arm weights. I then pulled out the 10 inch step; migrated to the stability ball and used the Bosu to place my hands to do push ups; and some sit ups. I then did some rope pulls various angles on the Smith machine. Ran outside a bit to include some fartleks. I was tired and stopped after 18 minutes.
The Bosu Trainer is a wonderful thing. It’s a 1/2 stability ball:
It’s great for cardio (stepping up, jogging on top, lunging on and off) as well as for core exercises. It is particularly good if you have any lower back problems, as your back is supported.
All, in all a very intense workout.
On Friday and Saturday, my husband and I our making a 7 hour trek to Syvla NC. It is near the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. We are opening our home to a beautiful English Setter girl who needs a home. We love English Setters. Because of their exercise requirements, ES’s are not easy dogs to place. Here’s a pic her if you care to look. She looks so much like my Lucy, the dog that is my avatar. Given that I have two rambunctious girls now, I’d likely NOT be adopting her if she were not such a pretty Llwellyn like Lucy.
As it turns out, there is a Border Collie that needs to come back to Richmond from this shelter (now how weird is that!?). So we’ll be transporting two girls to safety.
I’ll take my running shoes, and do a run in the beautiful Smokey Mountains.

When you are long winded, as I am, it is useful to give your readers a little breathing space. While good editing is always preferable, sometimes one needs something a bit more efficacious! Currently Sweat has a “more” post splitter which truncates your post so that more entries fit on a page. The reader merely clicks on the “more” and sees your entire post.
However, sometimes it is desirable to insert a plain post splitter. You can do it as follows:
If you want to use a post splitter such as this

Today was a beautiful fall day. After the train came through, I packed up my crew of two and went for a trail run. It was raining most of yesterday, so there was much mud on the trail, but there was also a colorful carpet of leaves.
Here’s
my program to date. I was a little slack last week. (Well…I cannot upload this image. I see there is a bug being fixed….. (PS: I went around my arse to get to my elbow, but I bypassed the problem. Brad in his uber-diligence and uber-brilliance found the root of the problem later! )
Both of my girls were untethered. I kept a leash on Daisey until I made it to the trail head. Daisey did her great circles, and Macy toggled between sniffing things of interest on the trail to running ahead. We did meet up with another dog–a hunting dog. There were no altercations, and I was very relieved that everyone had good manners.
All in all a VERY enjoyable run. Pace looks like that of a granny’s, but I was happy with my heart rate performance. I earned a 3+ on the Z-Factor and 117 points. That is a very good workout for me.

Tonight I meet my former boss for dinner at a new restaurant. I have a beautiful Dana Buchman suit that was hanging in the closet (tags still on) that I almost gave away. I’m wearing it out tonight. It fits well, and it looks terrific. It is a suit that is one size bigger than my ‘normal’ size. And I’ve been 2 sizes above ‘normal’ for about 2 years.
So, to slip into these pants and have them hang well and not be tight in the waist feels good. I have other ’smaller’ clothes that I’ll eventually get into–hopefully before the style changes! I started out in public accounting–so a skirted suit or dress were my business uniform for years and years. It wasn’t until 2002 that I bought a pantsuit!

While on vacation, I had the opportunity (sans puppitos) to test out my new mtb tire tread–a Continentatl product: FlowProtection. Since my husband changed out my mtb tires from an aggressive off-road tread to a gentler road/trail tread (to better reflect the venues and style that I’m likely to have now!), I’ve not really had much of a chance to test it out on the road. On Tuesday, I rode about 8 miles, which is my longest ride since beginning my fitness plan. And let me say this….saying that I’m beginning week 10 feels mighty satisfying indeed!
My husband rode for 5 miles, then his arse began to hurt–he had already had MUCH seat time on his dirtbike extravaganza. (Plus, he has no excess padding!). My own parts hurt a bit, but I really wanted to shoot for 10 miles. After biking INTO the wind during the miles 6-8, I concluded that I was too tired to continue further safely!
On Monday, I had a very nice run (also sans puppitos as they were 210 miles away!). I was able to run comfortably in the 152 hr zone without feeling winded. My legs felt good too.
Where we were staying was on the Hatteras Bay side. We were in a beautiful community called Kinnakeet Shores. Nice asphalt roads that are not heavily traveled by cars (it being off-season).
We saw many folks kite boarding (not to be confused with water boarding). The wind was very cooperative for these folks in their wetsuits holding onto colorful ‘kites’. The speeds that they were traveling appeared to be as fast as if they were being pulled by a boat! My husband displayed an unhealthy interest in this (being an avid water skiier).
As we traveled on Route 12, I wished for less wind. There’s a wide enough shoulder to bike safely, but the crosswind would have been quite unwelcome–it was enough to bluster and blow the truck, I imagine it would buffet a bike pretty hard! But there will be other opportunities, and to watch for opportunities to run or bike represents a turning point in my perspective. I think a good one!

And I come back, and it looks like the blog sttructure has changed! I see quote marks! Yeah! I see a new interface—Wowsa….no opinion yet, but from the 15 seconds that I’ve seen it, I think it is momentum forward!
I had a fantastic few days down at Hatteras. Wind was unrelenting, but the sun was out. The road was out Sunday for a while (we missed it) and Monday (we missed it). We arrived home safely. I had and active vacation, and I’ll post those.
I ran 2 miles on Monday, and I biked for 8 miles on Tuesday. There were a couple of directional turns that had me squarely in wind that made for some fantastical wind tunnelesque mileage. And….the hot tub was wonderful on these old bones and sore muscles.
I had a picture that was supposed to load…………BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDDDD!
